in a game 2 loss, walton got into a heated argument with his coach, jack ramsay. ramsay benched him for the final 24 minutes and the next game, he coached the blazers himself. although walton was back and healthy for game 4, the team lost the series and was eliminated.

ramsays decision was not well received by the fans or walton. they blamed him for the loss and demanded his head. when his contract expired at the end of the season, the blazers did not offer him a new one. walton promptly retired, and while he became a minor celebrity in the nba, he did not enjoy lasting fame. he remained in portland, where he started his own business, initially as a shoe store, and later as an apparel manufacturer. he spent the 1980s and early 1990s working for the miami heat and the san antonio spurs, helping both franchises reach the nba finals. he finished his career as a scout and assistant coach for the spurs.

for the second consecutive year, the blazers had been the cinderella team, and they bounced back from defeat to win their second consecutive title. after being matched against the new york knicks in the eastern conference finals, the team faced their biggest challenge in the postseason to that point. having set a number of records in the regular season, the blazers were now being matched by the supersonics in the finals. with walton's absence in the previous series, the blazers were forced to rely on their bench, and they came up short against seattle.
